On March 24, 2021, at approximately 3:25 p.m., Fort Collins Police Services (FCPS) officers responded to an area urgent care center regarding a three-year-old boy who was brought in by a family member.  The child was unconscious and not breathing.  Despite lifesaving efforts by on-site medical staff, the child was pronounced deceased at the urgent care center.

Larimer County Sheriff’s Office investigators were contacted because the child lived in unincorporated Larimer County.  At the time, it was not known if the event that caused the child’s death was a criminal act or an unknown medical issue.  During this joint investigation by LCSO and FCPS, investigators learned that around 1:30 p.m. that afternoon, the child was allegedly assaulted by his mother’s boyfriend, Jaime Omar Rodriguez (11/16/1993), for misbehaving while inside a commercial business in southeast Fort Collins.  The child was taken home from the business and later transported to the urgent care center when another family member observed the child was unresponsive.

The Larimer County Coroner’s Office will release the cause and manner of death at the appropriate time.

Rodriguez was arrested during the initial investigation on March 24 for an outstanding no bond Parole Violation warrant and was booked into the Larimer County Jail.  On March 26, Rodriguez was again arrested at the Larimer County Jail on charges of 1st Degree Murder (felony 1) and Child Abuse – Death (felony 2).  Bond has not been set on the new charges.  A booking photo is attached.

No additional information about this case will be released.

The charges are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until, and unless, proven guilty.
