The Board of Larimer County Commissioners recently voted to direct staff to proceed further with contract negotiations and gather more information from the Poudre River Public Library District [PRPLD]  on their proposed Mobile Outreach Program.

A funding proposal totaling $52,958 has been targeted to help fund the program, which will include the purchase of a van to help reach underserved populations. The funding comes from the Immediate Needs Grant, part of American Recovery Plan Act [ARPA] funding.

The funding was originally part of two proposals for the library district presented to the Board of Larimer County Commissioners on Jan. 19, 2022. The first proposal which was approved on Jan. 19, enabled the PRPLD to purchase laptops for residents for all types of uses --- education, telehealth, job searching, and other information purposes.

The board this week received more information on the second proposal, the Mobile Outreach Program, including populations that will be served from the program.

Eighty percent of the Mobile Outreach Program is targeted to families with young children, preschool, and daycare to help with school readiness since these populations have experienced disruptions within the last few years due to the COVID pandemic. The program will bring resources and materials to homes to help kids become more ready for school.

The program will also access disadvantaged or homebound populations with difficulty reaching the library --- older adults, unemployed residents with barriers to transportation, and others with impediments preventing them from taking advantage of library services.

“I think this is a very valuable service that I hope we can support,” said Larimer County Commissioner John Kefalas.

“I want to thank the staff for their hard work to make sure this money went to immediate needs,” said Larimer County Commissioner Jody Shadduck-McNally.

The Commissioners voted 2-0 to approve negotiations, Larimer County Commissioner Kristin Stephens was absent.
