June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
The Board of County Commissioners has accepted a proclamation to recognize June 15 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Larimer County. 2022 marks the 16th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Larimer County. This recognition will promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older adults within our community.
Ageism and social isolation are major causes of elder abuse in the United States. As our population lives longer, we are presented with an opportunity to think about our collective needs and future as a community.
“I think elder abuse is less known and less understood than child abuse, but the fact there were 1,800 referrals... that’s a big number," Kristin Stephens, Larimer County Commissioner, said. "I think it’s really important to value and support our older residents in how we help with transportation and connect all our communities in many ways."
This Proclamation recognizes we can work to prevent abuse of older adults through maintaining and improving social supports like senior centers, human services, and transportation, which will allow everyone to continue to live as independently as possible and contribute to the life and vibrancy of our communities.
