August is Child Support Awareness Month, helping children flourish

Children can thrive and grow to become healthy, productive adults when they receive the support they need from parents, caregivers, extended families, and others.

The Board of Larimer County Commissioners last week at their regular Administrative Matters meeting proclaimed August as Child Support Awareness Month in Larimer County. The Larimer County Child Support Services Program, a part of Larimer County Human Services, assists families by collecting and distributing child support payments to parents in the county.

During the federal fiscal year of 2021, thirty Larimer County child support staff members collected almost $19.5 million for families. “I wanted to call out the fact you collected that much this past year. That’s quite phenomenal,” said Larimer County Commissioner Jody Shadduck-McNally. “That’s a significant number for the wellbeing and care of these children that rely on this support.”

In addition to securing financial support payments for children, Child Support Services can also assist in establishing legal paternity, plus starting or modifying child support orders. “Child support is very important to make sure the children are safe and thriving,” added Larimer County Commissioner John Kefalas.

“The $19 million is getting to families in our community. We know that single-parent families are more likely to live in poverty and so these dollars change outcomes for families around economic security and the ability to pay for food and other necessities. This work is a hidden gem,” said Larimer County Commissioner Kristin Stephens.

Community members in Larimer County who feel they might benefit from the Child Services Support Program are encouraged to apply. There is no household income requirement to participate in the program.
