HR

GENERALIST HELPFUL TIPS:

  • Attitude is everything-positive mindset.
  • Be flexible (whether it’s work life balance, learning opportunities, job duties).  Listen to employees’ needs.
  • Know your staff/coworkers and their milestones, whether personal or professional (when someone has baby, gets married, has death, gets certification, hire anniversary, birthdays).
  • Recognition

SUCCESS STORIES:

After reviewing the Employee Survey Results, we reached out to department directors who met one of the following criteria:

  • Their department's score was higher than the County average in this category.
  • Their department raised their scores from previous years scores.

They provided us with insight, feedback, and suggestions for departments who would like to improve in this area.

"Our United Way rep, Donna, did an excellent job of bringing our department together AND allowing us to have fun at the same. She went out of her way create an environment that fostered a real camaraderie among staff. We had a mask decorating competition, bingo, a silent auction, mask decorating, and a virtual vacation. I believe its important to allow employees the opportunity to break up the monotony of the day and encourage a team effort."

Irene Josey, Treasurer

"Human Resources, and so many others, were instrumental in helping me identify some of our weaknesses and implement changes to address those concerns. We now have monthly staff meetings, we're cross-training employees so everyone knows what's going on, and we encourage our employees to look for education and opportunities to grow their careers. With the BOCC's approval, we were able to increase staff to help manage workload effectively. It's important to foster a team effort."

Bob Overbeck, Assessor

SUGGESTIONS & TIPS:

  • Communication is important. We strive for weekly staff meetings on Mondays and Tuesdays to ensure we're all on the same page and promote a sense of unity.
  • Ask questions of your employees, what's working, what can we do differently. Be willing to listen, adapt, change the way things are done, and admit your own mistakes.
  • Appreciation is important and making that one-on-one connection with staff.
  • Learn from mistakes and experiences; let your liabilities become strengths.
  • Empower your employees with the knowledge and tools they need for their job.
  • Don't be afraid to reach out for help. Having support and the correct resources/tools are instrumental in moving forward.
