HR

GENERALIST HELPFUL TIPS:

  • Recognizing people for bringing up different perspectives and ideas.
  • Create a culture where failure is okay, we learn from our failures.
  • Hiring people with different perspectives and ideas when vacancies occur.
  • Leading by example.
  • Ask yourself are we doing this in the most efficient way possible?  Can this be improved?
  • Encourage your teams to celebrate innovations and apply for Innovation Awards
  • Don’t be afraid to try something and potentially fail; something doesn’t have to be perfect. Every step is a good one we can build on.

SUCCESS STORIES:

After reviewing the Employee Survey Results, we reached out to department directors who met one of the following criteria:

  • Their department's score was higher than the County average in this category.
  • Their department raised their scores from previous years scores.

They provided us with insight, feedback, and suggestions for departments who would like to improve in this area.

"While IT tends to have innovation as part of it's innate nature already, we strive to get better at it. About six years ago, we implemented a change that encouraged our staff to empathize with departments and step into the user's shoes. We also intentionally created a safe place for employees to fail. We often experience multiple failed attempts before we find a successful solution to a problem.

I think one of our greatest success stories in 2020 was the COVID dashboard. As the pandemic continued, we quickly realized that we needed something more to help the Health department track cases. It was a great blend of the right people coming together, listening to the needs, and piloting an incredible program with real-time analytics."

Mark Pfaffinger, Information Technology

SUGGESTIONS & TIPS:

  • Don't automatically seek solutions without first listening to the problem.
  • Trust your employees to make decisions, empower them.
  • Know your constraints. What are the things you can't change (budget, resources, etc.)? And how do we work around those?
  • Accept that culture changes take time and will happen incrementally. Celebrate small wins.
  • Create a safe environment. Allow employees to fail and be okay with those failures; encourage learning from mistakes.
