The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal glider crash that happened Wednesday morning southwest of Berthoud.

On August 13, 2025 around 8:40 a.m., Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received a report of an aircraft crash in the 3600 block of West County Road 2 (located near the Larimer-Boulder county line). First responders from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, Berthoud Fire Protection District, and Thompson Valley EMS arrived at the scene and found an ultralight glider that had crashed and caught fire. Firefighters quickly worked to extinguish the flames, which were isolated to the glider. Sadly, they located the sole occupant, a Boulder man, deceased inside.

Several nearby power lines and poles were also significantly damaged. The preliminary investigation indicates that the glider likely hit the electrical lines before coming to rest on the dirt road. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Approximately 55 Poudre Valley REA members initially lost power, but PVREA crews quickly restored electricity to all but 3 surrounding homes. Their staff remained onsite to repair the broken lines and poles, and to ensure the safety of those working at the scene.

No other injuries or property damage has been reported. The Larimer County Coroner’s Office will release the man’s name, as well as official cause and manner of death, at a later time. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was notified of the crash. Due to the type of glider, they determined that the investigation will remain with the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office.

“Losing someone you care about is never easy, but a sudden loss like this is especially tough,” said LCSO Sgt. Justin Williamson, who leads the Berthoud squad. “We’ll keep this man’s family and our wider aviation community in our thoughts during the difficult days to come.”

Anyone who witnessed this incident, who has not already spoken with law enforcement, is asked to contact Investigator Stephen Gates at 970-498-5169.
