Signatures
Verifying Your Signature
Election judges verify your identity by comparing the signature on your official return envelope to your voter record (which includes signatures from previous elections, voter registration forms, and transactions with the Colorado Department of Revenue).
Rejected Signatures
Most of the time, signatures match and the ballot is accepted. If an election judge identifies a potential discrepancy (or maybe you forgot to sign your envelope), they'll escalate it to a bipartisan team of election judges for a more detailed review. If that bipartisan team determines that there is either a signature discrepancy or a missing signature, your ballot signature will be rejected. Then, we'll mail you a letter asking you to provide your signature and a copy of your ID—what is referred to as 'curing'.
How to Cure Your Rejected Signature
If the signature on your official return envelope doesn't match your voter record (or if you forgot to sign your envelope), you'll receive a letter from our Office asking you to cure your signature rejection.
Complete and Return the Form
To cure your signature rejection, simply complete and return the form to our Office using one of the following options:
- Email: Send it to us as an attachment to an email at [email protected]
- Fax: Fax it to our Office at (970) 498-7847
- Mail: Mail it to our Office at Larimer County Elections using the enclosed business reply envelope, or using your own envelope, ATTN: Signature Cure, PO Box 1547, Fort Collins, CO 80522
- In-Person: Drop it off at our Office on the 5th Floor of the Larimer County Administrative Services Building at 200 W Oak, Suite 5100, Fort Collins, CO 80521, Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm (excluding holidays). You can also drop it off at any vote center location.
Use Your Phone
If you prefer, you can also use your mobile phone to cure your signature rejection.
- Go to GoVoteColorado.gov
- Click on the link for "Cure my Ballot" under "Track or Cure Your Ballot" near the bottom of the page.
- You can also scan a QR Code or visit the page directly at https://myballot.coloradosos.gov/ecure/app/home
- Enter your Voter ID. Your Voter ID should be displayed in the top right corner of your letter.
- If you're having trouble finding your Voter ID, you can look up your Voter ID by checking your registration with the Colorado Secretary of State's Office. You can also call our Office at (970) 498-7820.
Then, use your phone to enter your signature and take a picture of an acceptable form of ID.
Don't Forget to Include Your ID
Please note: your vote will not count unless you include your ID. If you are completing and returning the form, please make sure to include a photocopy of your ID. If you are using your phone and are asked to take a photograph of your ID, do not take a selfie. The photograph should only include your ID. For a list of acceptable forms of ID, visit our ID page.
What Happens If You Didn't Vote
If you didn't vote in the election, simply select the appropriate option on the signature affidavit form and return it to our Office according to the steps above. In this scenario, the ballot will not count, and we will refer it to the District Attorney's Office for further investigation. However, you still have the option to vote! Call our Office at (970) 498-7820 for additional information.
Make Sure to Return the Form
Similarly, if you do not complete and return the signature affidavit form, the ballot will not count, and we will refer the signature discrepancy to the District Attorney's Office for further investigation.
Notifications
Whenever the signature on a ballot envelope is rejected, our Office will send a printed letter within three days, and no later than two days after the election. If you have an email address on record, we'll send you that notification by email, too. If you're signed up for notifications with BallotTrax, you'll also receive a notification via text, email, or phone according to your preference. If you're interested in receiving notifications, you can sign up for BallotTrax at Larimer.BallotTrax.net.
Deadlines
Regardless of when the signature cure letter is sent, all signature cure letters must be received no later than eight days after the election. Return your letter as soon as you can.
Unable to Sign?
If you're unable to sign your official return envelope, you can use a witness. To use a witness:
- Mark the Signature Affirmation: First, make a mark (such as "X") in the signature box.
- Please do not try to sign your name. In order to use a witness, just make a simple mark.
- Witness Affirmation: Then, have the witness print their legal name in the witness affirmation box on the official return envelope.
- Please make sure the witness' name is legible. The witness should not sign their name.
If you have any questions, give us a call or send us an email at (970) 498-7820 or [email protected].
