The Office of the District Attorney for the Eighth Judicial District is pleased to announce our involvement in the national Prosecutorial Performance Indicators (PPI) initiate. This project will provide both internal and external-facing data that provides information to the public concerning our processes and outcomes in order to measure performance towards three goals: Capacity and Efficiency, Community Safety and Well-being, and Fairness and Justice.

    DA's Citizens Academy applications open

    The 8th Judicial District Attorney Gordon McLaughlin is pleased to announce the fifth annual Citizens Academy. This free, four-week academy will be held on consecutive Tuesdays and Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., October 6th to October 29th, 2026 at the Justice Center in Fort Collins, CO.

    Announcing the 8th Judicial District Bias-Motivated and Hate Crime Hotline

    The 8th Judicial District Attorney’s Office is proud to announce the launch of a Bias-Motivated and Hate Crime Hotline to serve as an additional reporting tool for our community. In 2025, the District Attorney’s Office received questions from concerned community members about how best to report bias-motivated crimes, how to ensure their safety while reporting, and how our office could support those investigations and victims.

    V.A.L.E. Board Announces Grant Application for 2027 Funding

    The Victim Assistance and Law Enforcement Board of the 8th Judicial District has announced the grant application for funding in 2027. These grant dollars are for agencies that serve crime victims in Larimer and Jackson Counties.

    What does the DA’s Office do?

    • Submits and/or reviews requests to the court to issue warrants for arrest. 
    • Makes recommendations for bond amount and stipulations.
    • Screens and decides whether to file felony cases referred from law enforcement with the courts.
    • Conducts outreach and provides resources to victims of crime.
    • Screens defendants for diversion or other alternatives to prosecution.
    • Investigates cases for additional evidence or victim participation.
    • Prepares and litigates cases at pre-trial motions, hearings, and trials.
    • Evaluates charges, and amends as appropriate.
    • Extends plea offers as warranted.
    • Makes sentencing recommendations.
    • Collaborates with other government agencies and the public to develop programs to address the safety and well-being of the community.

    What does the DA’s Office not do?

    • Arrest individuals. Law enforcement arrests and refers individuals when there is probable cause of offense.
    • Set bond. The judicial officer makes the decision on the amount and the conditions of bond.
    • Impose sentences. The judge imposes a sentence following conviction.
