Robert Allen Johnson was sentenced yesterday to 10 years in the Department of Corrections after a jury found him guilty of assault in the first degree, a class three felony, menacing with a real or simulated weapon, a class five felony, assault in the third degree, a class one misdemeanor, and obstructing telephone service, a class one misdemeanor.

A jury found Mr. Johnson not guilty of attempted first-degree murder following the trial in May 2025.

On February 23rd, 2024, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home in Berthoud, CO. Someone in the home had called to report that his wife had been strangled by her son, Robert Johnson. While on the phone, the caller reported that Mr. Johnson was pacing around the residence with a rifle. The caller and the other victim exited the home to wait safely for deputies to respond.

A crisis negotiator contacted Mr. Johnson by phone and successfully secured his surrender before he was taken into custody.

The three-day trial, led by Major Crimes Prosecutor Matthew Pring, concluded in May 2025 with a jury finding Mr. Johnson guilty of four of five charges.

At yesterday’s sentencing, the prosecution argued for a 20-year sentence in the Department of Corrections, citing the aggravated nature of the crime. Mr. Johnson’s actions resulted in both a serious injury to his mother and lasting emotional effects on both his mother and stepfather. The victims in this case also requested that the judge impose a 20-year sentence. The Judge ultimately sentenced Mr. Johnson to 10 years in the Department of Corrections, with three years of parole.

“I am proud of this team for standing by the victims in this case,” said District Attorney Gordon McLaughlin. “I’m thankful law enforcement was able to resolve the situation without further injury to anyone inside the home. This was a challenging situation, and our team was by their side every step of the way. Our thoughts are with the victims as they continue to recover from this traumatic event.”
