Join Larimer County Naturalists for an up-close exploration of the geology of Devil's Backbone Open Space. Learn more about the area's distinct rock formations that formed hundreds of millions of years ago in ancient environments such as salt flats, floodplains, deserts, alkaline lakes, and gravelly rivers—when North America looked vastly different than it does today. As we hike the Morrison Loop, you'll learn the basics of Earth's history through the colorful rock layers, which have been uplifted by geologic forces to create the Backbone's striking landscape.
Ever wonder why a pronghorn runs so fast? Why do some delicious melons lie rotting on the ground uneaten? Perhaps it never occurred to you to even ask such questions. It's the kind of mysteries curious biologists ask themselves as they explore the natural world. And they have discovered some answers. Answers related to climate change in the past that may help us navigate our futures through climate changes yet to come.
Who has lived at Ramsay-Shockey Open Space? Why is there a reservoir here? We'll explore the history of water in Colorado and how Pinewood Reservoir and Ramsay-Shockey Open Space are connected to it.

What's in a name? A whole lot if your name is Horsetooth Mountain, and your profile is part of Fort Collins' City logo. In this 90-minute guided hike, we'll explore the topographic and ecologic features of our area's most iconic natural landmark. The hike courses along the lower part of the Horsetooth Mountain Open Space, where you'll learn about the area's unique geology, vegetation, and even its centuries-old creation stories, passed down by our area's first residents.

LOVELAND – Larimer County Department of Natural Resources (LCDNR) is excited to launch its third year of ‘Rate Your Day,’ a visitor satisfaction survey aimed at capturing community feedback following park and open space visits. Whether you're hiking, camping, or simply enjoying nature, LCDNR wants to hear from you.

Enjoy an evening with members of the Northern Colorado Astronomical Society (NCAS) for an up-close look at the night sky over the Rockies. Telescopes will be available for viewing stars, galaxies, planets and more! Bring the whole group to connect with the wonders of the night sky.

This open house-style program is located at Horsetooth Mountain Open Space (entrance on County Road 38E). Telescopes will be set up in the paved parking lot. Program is free but a parking pass is required. Registration is encouraged.
Bring your 2-5 year old for a morning filled with nature exploration, stories, and connection with our amazing natural world. Lots of things make people feel safe, like a cozy blanket, a stuffy, and our favorite people. But what makes animals feel safe? A good home! This month, we'll explore the places wild animals call home and what they need to feel safe.

A parent or guardian must accompany the child for this program. Registration is required but program is free.
