Country Club Road Safety Improvement Project
PROJECT OVERVIEW
This project will reconstruct an approximately 2-mile section of CR 50E (Country Club Road) to improve safety, address deteriorating pavement conditions, and enhance capacity and accessibility for all users. The design will follow recommendations from a 2023 corridor study. Because of the corridor’s length and cost, improvements will be phased as funding becomes available. A phasing plan is shown on the map below.
LOCATION
The project corridor extends from Highway 1 (Terry Lake Road) to Turnberry Road.
ANTICIPATED PROJECT PHASES
The corridor improvements are divided into four phases:
- Phase 1: New roundabout at Country Club Road and Lemay Avenue. Construction planned for 2028.
- Phase 2: Mini-roundabout at the Fort Collins Country Club entrance. Not yet funded; schedule to be determined.
- Phase 3: Country Club Road from Lemay Avenue to Turnberry Road (east section). Not yet funded; schedule to be determined.
- Phase 4: Country Club Road from State Highway 1 to Lemay Avenue (west section). Not yet funded; schedule to be determined.
Why design the entire corridor now? The federal grant includes design of the entire corridor. Completing design for all four phases now gives the County a coordinated plan, so later phases can move forward when construction funding becomes available. Also shovel ready projects typically score higher on grant applications
PROJECT DETAILS
What is being proposed:
The project will transform the corridor with a new roadway cross-section that includes:
- Two 11-foot wide travel lanes
- 4-foot wide paved shoulders for improved roadside safety
- A detached 10-foot wide multiuse path to accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists.
- A new roundabout at the Country Club/Lemay intersection to improve traffic flow and safety
- Sidewalk access from Country Club Road to Tavelli Elementary
- Raised crosswalks and traffic calming circles at several locations to enhance pedestrian safety
- Improved drainage ditches and culverts between the roadway and the new multiuse path
Proposed Cross Section:
This image shows the recommended design for the new roadway cross section, including the multiuse path and paved shoulders.
Project Purpose and Need
The CR 50E corridor is experiencing significant increases in traffic, with future forecasts showing a 50-60% increase by 2045. As one of the only east-west connections in the area, the road has become a shortcut for commuters, creating significant safety concerns for local residents, bicyclists, and pedestrians. This project is a direct response to these issues, with a goal of designing a transportation network that is safer and more efficient for all users. Crash data shows that a high percentage of severe crashes are broadside and rear-end collisions. The proposed improvements are expected to have a "moderate to high potential" for crash reduction.
Project History
This project is the result of a long-term effort to address the challenges along CR 50E. A comprehensive Corridor Study, completed in early 2023, was used as the basis for the grant application. The study was prepared in conjunction with Larimer County and City of Fort Collins staff, as well as area property owners and stakeholders, to develop recommendations for multimodal travel improvements. Public meetings were also held between March and July 2022 to gather community input.

Project Schedule
Design for the entire corridor is underway. Phase 1 is scheduled through construction. Right-of-way acquisition and construction for Phases 2–4 depend on future funding and have not been scheduled.
- Design: Fall 2025 - Early 2028
- J-U-B Engineers was selected as the design consultant.
- Survey, utility, soils, and environmental field work: 2025–2026[C4.1]
- Conceptual design for the entire corridor and preliminary design for Phase 1: anticipated winter 2026 – spring 2027[C5.1]
- Final design for Phase 1: 2027
- Final design for Phases 2–4: anticipated 2028
- Right-of-Way Acquisition (Phase 1): 2027
- Construction (Phase I): 2028
- Right-of-Way Acquisition and Construction (Phases 2-4): To be determined, based on funding.
The public will have a chance to review and comment on the preliminary design at an open house. The date will be announced.
BUDGET
Design of the entire corridor is funded in part by a federal RAISE grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Construction funding for Phases 2–4 has not been identified. Those phases will be scheduled as funding becomes available.
