Emissions Requirements

Larimer County residents are required to obtain a certificate of emissions control for vehicles within a designated area of Larimer County

Gasoline Vehicles

Upon renewal, the courtesy reminder postcard displays whether an emissions test is required, or if the vehicle passed a roadside inspection.

Tests can be completed at Air Care Colorado locations.

Exemptions

Gasoline or gasoline hybrid vehicles are exempt from an emissions test for the first seven (7) model years.

Transfer of Ownership

If the ownership of a gasoline or gasoline hybrid vehicle is being transferred in the last year of the seven year exemption, an emissions test is required. For example, in 2025, an emissions test will be required if the ownership of a model year 2019 is transferred.

A new unused passing emissions test is required for each transfer of ownership after the exemption period.

Diesel Vehicles

Diesel emission testing is required within a designated area of Larimer County.

Diesel Emission Station Locations

Please note: Call to verify the availability of test type, hours, etc. before proceeding to the locations.

Exemptions

Diesel or diesel hybrid vehicles are exempt from an emissions test for the first two (2) or four (4) model years depending on the model year as well as the gross vehicle weight rating

Transfer of Ownership

If the ownership of a diesel or diesel hybrid vehicle is being transferred in the last year of the exemption, an emissions test is required.

If the vehicle is temporarily located outside Colorado during the renewal cycle and needs an emissions test, please apply for an Out-of-state Emissions Extension or complete the DR 2376 Emission Extension Form and call us at 970-498-7878.

  • Vehicles that are 1975 and older registered with 5-year Collector plates are exempt from emissions testing.
  • Vehicles that are 32 model years or older back to 1976 qualify for the 5-year Collector plates but require an emissions test every five years. A completed DR2839 Collector's Item Affidavit is required.
