Active duty military personnel temporarily living in the State of Colorado, have two options for vehicle registration.

  1. If maintaining an out of state driver's license, the out of state license plates may be retained on your vehicle. You will however be required to comply with the State of Colorado emissions and insurance requirements.
  2. If living in the State of Colorado for an extended period of time and planning on obtaining Colorado license plates and registration, certain criteria must be met. The Larimer County Vehicle Licensing Department will require:

Disabled veterans may qualify for one free set of Disabled Veteran license plates upon submitting proof of qualifications:

  • A completed DR 2002 form Military License Plate Application
  • DD214
  • Eligibility letter from Veteran Affairs stating the Veteran has a 50% or greater percentage of disability; and the disability is service connected; and the disability is permanent

The free set of license plates are ordered and renewed at your county vehicle licensing office. The qualifying individual must be an owner, lessee, or trust beneficiary of the vehicle.

Qualified persons may request an additional set of Disabled Veteran license plates subject to applicable registration fees.
